Three things I wish I knew when I started lifting…

I wish someone would have told me these 3 things sooner so I didn’t waste so many years with little progress and this is going to rub some people the wrong way 😬…

1. You have to have a plan. No random YouTube video, your cousin’s boyfriend jotted down some lifts for you, or walking in willy nilly throwing lifts together is going to help you. Unless you have a structured microcycle progressing from volume to strength training, timing the rest/work phases correctly, including progressive overload, you’re wasting your time. Sorry, but someone had to say it.

2. You need to fuel your body. Ladies, I’m looking at you. You can’t be in a severe calorie deficit and expect to put on muscle. You have to put on lean muscle in order to lose fat, increase your basal metabolic rate, and burn calories more effectively. You NEED carbs prior to that lift or you’re going to blow through your glycogen stores and then dig into your MUSCLE stores, not fat. Your body doesn’t want to use fat as an energy source. In fact it’s its last resort. It’s going to utilize your lean muscle that you’re working so hard to build next. Eat more protein. Rebuild that muscle and trust the process.

3. Unless you’re addressing your hormones and making sure they’re balanced, you’re going to be stuck. You can do all the work in the gym, but if your using products with endocrine disruptors, eating processed foods, not addressing the stress in your life, getting proper sleep, you’re wasting your time. Get a full blood panel done to see what’s really going on inside, work on balancing your hormones with cleaner products, and see what vitamins you may be deficient in. One small change can make all the difference.
